Tamil Nadu Agricultural University as a leading agro-technology provider has its beginning with an agricultural school in 1876.The agricultural College and Research institute, Coimbatore was the only institute for Agricultural Education for the whole of South India till 1946. At present, ten constituent colleges, two affiliated colleges, thirty-four research stations, six plant clinic centers and thirteen KVKs are functioning under the university.

CARDS
The Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies is functioning as multidisciplinary center of the TNAU to carry out research in socio economic issues concerning agricultural and rural development. Main objectives are to develop a strong programme in agricultural and rural development research, teaching and extension, to impart education and conduct research in agricultural extension and rural sociology and train personnel for effective transfer of technology and to foster inter-institutional collaboration at regional, national and international levels for research, training and development in select areas.
Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agribusiness
The Department of Agricultural Marketing, which is functioning since 1977, with the main objective of Regulation of Agricultural Marketing, was renamed in the year 2001 as Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agribusiness in order to focus on other activities like Agri Export, Post Harvest Management, Food Processing, etc.
There are 273 Regulated Markets, 15 Sub Markets, 15 Check Posts, 108 Rural Godowns and 108 Grading Centres functioning under the 20 Market Committees. Competitive and remunerative prices are ensured for the produce sold by the farmers through closed tender system in the Regulated Markets. To help the producers to get better prices for their produce according to their grades, 96 Commercial Grading
Centres, 11 Kapas Grading Centers and one Tobacco Grading Centre are functioning in the Regulated Markets.

National Information Centre (NIC)
National Informatics Centre (NIC) was set up with the objective to promote economic, social, scientific and technological activities, and also for macro-economic adjustment programme of the Government, through the applications of IT. NIC functions under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Govt of India. NIC has been instrumental in promotion of informatics culture at national, state and district levels, through development of computer based information systems in various sectors and establishment of computer network for dissemination of data. NIC provides wide ranging IT services including consultancy, software design and development, training, networking, Email and Internet services through NICNET, web design, development and hosting, videoconferencing and turnkey solutions. NIC has developed various national data bases for use in planning and decision making by the government.
